Ferti-N - Nitrogen fixation with native vigor.

Ferti-N is a liquid microbial product based on Azotobacter chroococcum, a native nitrogen-fixing bacterium that occurs naturally in Dutch soils. In fact, this bacterium was first discovered in the Achterhoek region. Due to its native origin, Azotobacter is perfectly adapted to our soil conditions and works efficiently and sustainably with the crop.

Unlike Rhizobium bacteria (in leguminous plants), Azotobacter does not require a specific host plant. It moves freely in the soil and functions independently as long as conditions are favorable.

How does Ferti-N work?

Azotobacter chroococcum binds nitrogen (N₂) from the air and converts it to ammonium (NH₄), a directly absorbable form for the plant. To survive, the bacteria feed on exudates from the root zone (rhizosphere). As an added bonus, the bacteria themselves stimulate root growth by secreting auxin, a natural growth substance.

For optimal function, good soil structure, sufficient root activity, and the presence of trace elements such as molybdenum, iron and vanadium are essential. These elements are involved in the nitrogen fixation process depending on soil temperature.

(See below in which crop strategy Ferti-N plays an important role in practice)

Key features at a glance:

  • Converts atmospheric nitrogen into plant-absorbable nitrogen

  • Promotes root growth through auxin production

  • Free-living; thus works without a specific host plant

  • Reinforces action of Rhizobium (in leguminous plants) and Mycorrhiza

  • Synergy with other Ferti-Line products, in particular Ferti-Release*.

  • Contributes to natural N availability according to the growth curve of the crop

*Ferti-N can be mixed and sprayed together with Ferti-Release.

NOTE: Spray max with 3 bar spray pressure and avoid exposure to UV light. Spray preferably in cloudy weather or in the evening. Maintain a soil temperature of at least 10 degrees (do not spray too early in the season).

Application and Advice

In grassland, we spray Ferti-N after the first cut, as soon as the second cut starts to grow through. This is often the time when the soil temperature remains nicely above 10 degrees and the biology is active. The beauty of the Ferti-N is that this product works through the soil (unlike many other N-binders such as Blue-N which is only active through the leaf/on the crop). The duration effect is therefore long and only 1 spray is needed; 0.5 ltr/ha.

Some 25-30 kg of N-activity is thus obtained, nitrogen that does not need to be purchased!

Application and Advice

In cereal cultivation, considerable savings can also be made on total nitrogen application with the crop strategy of N-xt Fertilizers. With the application of Ferti-N at the right time you can save about 25 kg of nitrogen (nitrogen you do not supply).

Spray around the phase of sprouting with 0.5 ltr/ha Ferti-N. This can also be excellently combined with 0.5 ltr/ha Ferti-Release and is even recommended! Especially if another fertilization with slurry is going to take place. The utilization of this also goes up considerably.

Recommended doses of Ferti-N

In practice, we see great effects and benefits of Ferti-N in both grassland and cereal crops. An application of only one separate spray of 0.5 ltr/ha is sufficient. However, this should be done under the right conditions;

  • Do not spray until the soil temperature is (permanently) above 10 degrees.
  • Beware of direct sunlight; spray preferably on a cloudy day or in the evening.
  • Watch the spraying pressure; do not let it exceed 3 bar
  • Store the Ferti-N cool and dark (the purchased product has a shelf life of 1 year)

Application

Dosage

Grain (after draining) 0.5 ltr/ha
Grassland (after 1st cut, beginning growth 2nd cut) 0.5 ltr/ha
Other crops 0.5 ltr/ha

Ferti-N in practice

Research has shown that biology can have a significant impact on the nitrogen uptake of the crop. Therefore, the right nitrogen fertilizer has a major impact on the total nitrogen efficiency of the crop and thus on the farm. The graph below shows the difference between the N-efficiency of N-xt fertilizers on grassland compared to KAS and also the additional effect of a good nitrogen fixer (in this case the Azotobacter in the Ferti-N). So only together with the right properties of a fertilizer can the natural power of soil biology be utilized.
